Fearless Carving at Peters Valley School of Craft
Carving in wood can free us to think outside the box and the circle. Focus on the carved vessel as a vehicle for exploring concavity and convexity, sculptural ideas, mass and balance. You will sketch your own designs and think creatively about form and how it relates to function. We will learn roughing out techniques on the bandsaw and drill press and then go ‘unplugged’ from there. You will build skill with spokeshaves, drawknives, carving gouges, rasps, files, and scrapers. Grain direction, bevel angles, edge tool anatomy, good posture and habits, hold down techniques, rims, and surface treatments will be part of our conversation along the way. Beginner and Beyond
This is a soft and sculpted eating spoon with a splash of color. It has subtly wavy grain and this layer of crimson red that makes its simple shape come to life.
